Nature
Using natural materials we will learn about some of the different types of flora (flowers) in Calgary! We will use magnifying glasses to compare and contrast different types of leaves and other natural materials. We will follow a nature obstacle course, and then use natural materials to make a collaborative birds nest!

Einstein Portraits
Find out about Einstein, the man, and who he was! You will be able to choose from a variety of mediums to create an Einstein portrait, discover what a portrait is and why they are made, and express your thoughts about Einstein’s life! Saturday was the first sunny day in a very long time!!

Little Learner's class were studying the shape of "things" by wrapping them up in yarn!
We learned about Cristo and Jean Claude and we got to work!

Our fingers sure got a workout!! After trying a few different objects, we decided to start wrapping the teacher.. unfortunatly she couldn't reach the camera without getting untied!

The older kids made their own lego masks!

Today in the Little Learner's Program we made Space Shuttles!

The body was made from old plastic bottles, the wings were made with newspapers, then we covered the whole thing in plaster bandage!

All of us started with the same materials, but all our Shuttles look very different!

In the Afternoon the Older kids made soap using lego.
This was a complicated process but it was also very fun!
First, we created something out of lego, then we made an imprint in clay, then we poured liquid nitrogen to freeze the imprint. After that we poured in the soup
and once it hardened we popped the soap out!

Now the Creative kids Museum smells like Vanilla, Rasberry and Mango!!

mmmm!

it was difficult but fun! (we put mom's to work!)

Getting the lego out was the REALLY hard part!

Transformers Exhibit in the Artist's Space

The ASA has developed a travelling exhibiton entitled Transformers from the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. Seventeen mized media art works reference transformative acts and mysterious interventions that defy easy explanation. Shape shifting, magical inferences and surreal episodes populate teh chosen art works - occasionally twisting familiar subjects into the unfamiliar and back again. Modest in scale and not really like Hollywood's blockbuster film, this exhibition provides provocative and playful perspectives on nature, civilization, biology and other topical issues of our time.

Exploring with different kinds of leaves, visitors can create their own mandala, design or patterns. Each piece will be digitally photographed and incorporated into a large scale mandala.

Artist in Residence: Joan Bailey !!! November 12 - December 10.

Joan will be creating a community canvas with visitors by making leaf impressions
with acrylic inks and paint on one shared canvas. Together with visitors, Joan will
be studying different types of plants, leaves and trees.

Visitors will be working in an Impressionist style, which means you see the
'likeness' of the leaf but it doesn't look exactly like the real thing. You still
have to use your imagination to fill in the details!

Artist Space residency: VAL LAWTON 10/10 - 11-4

Val Lawton will be starting her residency in the Artist Space October 10 - November 4:

Val Lawton, Illustrator

Val Lawton’s favourite children’s books growing up were the great English stories
like Winnie-the-Pooh and Tim Goes to Sea. It was the scratchy pen and ink
illustrations that especially appealed to her as they left so much up to her
imagination.

Today, Val creates art for books in a similar free-wheeling
style. She also loves to experiment with this style of drawing and the old-fashioned
optical devices like flip-books, thaumatropes and zoetropes.

Val will be exploring some of these 19th century animation toys during the month of
October and invites children young and old to join her. She will have zoetrope on-hand, as well as supplies to create two-sided thaumatropes, and short flip-books.

Val’s is currently at work illustrating Where Does Your Cat Nap?, and will have some
of her work-in-progress at the Museum during the month of October. When she’s not
illustrating, Val’s teaching with the Learning Through the Arts program.

Recreating Alberta with Reinvented Materials

Creative Kids are invited to Recreate Alberta using found materials!
Explore, glue, hammer, tape, paint and fold everyday materials to create
an interactive exhibit. Young Artists and their families will recreate
some of our great Alberta Landmarks and have a hand in creating the future
by designing and building their very own landmarks.

Join us at Creative Kids Museum! Workshop times are
11am -2pm Friday September 18, and
10am-1pm Saturday September 19.

Additional to all provincially owned historic sites and museums open for free during this period, if you walk around Calgary - our very own city is RICH in public art and art spaces!

September 4 - October 7::: Imagined Texts: Exploring Community

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program managed
by the Alberta Society of Artists is featuring the exhibition "Imagined
Texts: Exploring Community" in the Artist Space from September 4 –
October 7.

Featuring 76 art works in 15 presentation units by approximately 100 participants, this exhibition was curated by Les Pinter and developed by the Alberta Society of Artists in partnership with the Alberta Printmakers Society, the Alexandra Writers' Centre Society and the Calgary Chapter of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild.

The DVD documents the processes used and the interaction among participants during the project."

Hi, I am the Giant Chair

This week we celebrated Chinese New Year, this is the year of the Ox!

First the creative kids started with a box (box rhymes with Ox, it was definitely a good choice of materials).

Next they covered the box in fur and gave it a furry nose and horns.

When it was all covered, they painted the horns, made a wreath of flowers, and made a few lanterns for decoration.

Did you know that:

The Stone Sculptor’s Guild of North America (SSGNA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1994. Our mandate is to teach and encourage the art of stone carving in North America and around the world. We have regular meetings and support regular events such as competitions and symposia. We foster an understanding and awareness of the sculpture process.

SSGNA is a group of sculptors creating permanent sculptures for the community. Working in a variety of stone, the group is promoting local awareness of this most ancient art form. The contemporary works of art created by the artists of SSGNA are made to last millennia. The guild has contributed more than 39 sculptures to the City of Calgary (Outwest Park, Barclay Mall, Bow River pathway at 14th Street, Pumphouse Theatre, and Mount Royal College).

The SSGNA group of artists has conducted a Stone Sculpture Symposium Conference in Calgary last summer from July 16 to August 31, 2007. In this Symposium Conference, the sculptors of our guild created their own individual interpretations of “The Circle of Life” out of stone. From this event a permanent Sculpture Park was created here in Calgary for everyone to enjoy. Sculpture is the only “visual” art form that the visually impaired are able to enjoy.

Creating Soundscapes

Hi this is the Theatre,

I have had many visits from Grade 3, one of the school programs that they work on is called "Creating Soundscapes". The students work together by using a music program to create their own original songs

Today we had a visit from Langevin School this is the song that they created, creatively enough , the title is "The Song"

The Band takes a break from Practice

Hi, This is the Sound and Music Area speaking! I am the part of the Museum where visitors can explore Music! Somewhere inside my walls live Dr. Billy and the Teddy Bear Experience. They are a fuzzy rock 'n roll band and best friends. Have you ever seen them practice? You have to look all around for them, they are kind of difficult to find! Dr. Billy is a doctor of sound, he does the arrangements and writes the songs. Teddy is the bass player, he enjoys the simple things in life. Rabbit plays lead guitar and does the vocals, he is the one that tells the other band members when their guitars need tuning. His ears were made for listening!

Today after all the visitors left the building, Dr. Billy and the Teddy Bear Experience took a break from band practice, and explored the Creative Kids Museum:

They waited until everyone was gone and snuck out from their rehearsal space. Do you know where they rehearse? Next time you visit us, try to find them! they are ALWAYS practicing (except, ofcourse, when they are not).

Rabbit and Dr Billy played with my musical floor, while Teddy was mesmerized by my disco ball.

Then they went into my Techno Room where Dr Billy broke down some serious beats while Rabbit did some mixing. Teddy could not stop staring at my disco ball!

Rabbit went into my JAM Room, and listened very closely to the new sounds that Dr Billy was experimenting with. Its very helpful to have Big ears when you play in a band! Then I could not see them anymore, but I could tell they were very inspired by the sounds that they experimented with!

Hi Im the Sculpture Pit, I am the part of the Museum where you can build, invent and construct!

Here Teddy and Dr. Billy put together a carrot for Rabbit. He could only imagine eating a carrot that big!

Listening...

"Can you hear me now?" Teddy said.

Dr. Billy posed for a portrait at the Collage Area, Rabbit did the gluing, and Teddy handed him the materials! It looks just like him don't you think?

Oh dear. Sometimes when you are with friends, things can get a little silly!

Teddy needed some quiet time after all that giggling, and read the Band members a story about a Frog.

"WOAH!"

Hi Im the Theatre, Im the place where you can act out stories, put on plays, puppet shows, dance, or even act out scenes from your favorite movies!

"Hello!"yells Rabbit.

"Hi!" yells Dr. Billy.

"How is it going?" sais Teddy.

Hello I am the Giant Chair, I welcome you into the Creative Kids Museum. Dr. Billy is always such a joker that he decided to show off for his friends. "Get Down Dr! Those things are not for climbing!!"

Although things did not end as planned the band sure had a great time! (Not to worry Dr. Billy can still play the guitar!)
